Tourism 2020/21 trends review from Phocuswright, Amadeus, PATA and Profi.Travel

Tourist business has repeatedly had the opportunity to observe how fast Russian travel market can revive after stress and crisis. Usually this process in the country goes faster than in Europe – even now already 53% of Russians are ready to go on a journey as soon as the restrictions are lifted.
At OTM Winter 2020/2021 opening live broadcast, on October 12, Head of Corporate Marketing of AMADEUS in Europe Sasha Nau spoke about this. To compare, generally in the world this index is around 37%. The data were obtained based on a survey of 5790 respondents from different countries, including 200 from Russia. The fact that Russian tourists expressed their readiness for long-distances traveling, including abroad (71%), also inspires optimism. In addition, more than a half of them would like to have vacations for two weeks or more. Looks like a tourist renaissance would happen after the pandemic. However, the lockdown left its mark - 40% of Russians expect to spend less on travel than before.
The picture in Southeast Asia differs a lot. Much less people are ready to resume the trips. Within 2-3 upcoming months only 20.9% of respondents plan to travel close to their homeplace, a little more than 17% plan the trips around their country, and only 3.9% consider going abroad. These data about the tourist behavior in the Asia-Pacific region of «new reality» were presented by Paul Pruangkarn, Director of Communications & External Affairs of PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association).

The expert also added that the pandemic dictates new safety criteria, some of them will remain with us for many years or forever. Among them are a digital health ID, contactless solutions, self-service technologies, safety certificates and protocols. According to the research, the Southeast Asian tourists are especially sensitive to these criteria. It's important to keep in mind for those who are planning to receive these guests after the pandemic.

The unconditional European trend is «home travelling». 96% of Europeans are ready to travel within their country, 77% - within Europe. These statistics were presented at OTM: Winter 2020/21 by Madeline List, Phocuswright Research Analyst. She referred that the most important factor in travel decision-making is the possibility to cancel a trip with a possibility to save money. 70-80% of travelers stick to this position, the percentage varies depending on the country. Travelling by auto expectedly comes to the fore.

A surprising conclusion about Russian tourists was made during the presentation of Nadja Ebel, Head of Profi.Travel Analytical Center. In 2020 their interest in package tours and travel agencies have increased 1.5 times compared to the last year. Professional experience has become more in demand in conditions of uncertainty. The desire to be supported in case of an outstanding situation has also influenced. This is one of the characteristics of the new portrait of the Russian traveler, which was presented by Profi.Travel Analytical Center in cooperation with Mail.Ru Group.
